Some people think the appearance of a building is more important than its function. To what extent do you agree?

Both appearance and function of a building have to be considered when designing it. However, compared with function, some claim that appearance is more important. I am totally against this idea. For me, function is more essential than appearance.

First, the purpose of constructing any building is to give it some sort of function, whether it is an office building, a house, an apartment building or stadium. If we pay too much attention to the appearance, we have to sacrifice a proportion of its function given the fixed cost. For example, if we want to give the building a grand and gorgeous façade, we have to spend less on the interior or other parts. Moreover, even if money is not a problem, it is a waste of tax-payers’ money. We want to use these buildings instead of just watching them every day.

Second, distinct designs of buildings need special techniques to achieve. Sometimes, it comes at the expense of safety. I have seen buildings which look like two dragons interweaved in Beijing. Most people do not seem to be interested in the appearance but worried about its safety. Besides, with the increasing awareness of environmental protection, people often disapprove of building that has costly and fancy but impractical looking especially buildings with huge glasses on exterior walls, which gives buildings a shiny appearance, on the other hand results in light pollution in the area. Therefore, appearance should not be the top priority.

Third, for some famous architects, or people who do not need to use the buildings they see, appearance does come first. A fancy-looking and unique building will bring them sense of accomplishment and good vision effects. They do not need to care about the function very much. But to people who have to stay in the building every day will believe ordinary looking will be enough, whether the rooms are spacious, whether each inch of space is reasonably used, whether each part is easily identify is of their top concern.

In summary, we have to admit people do like buildings that have aesthetic appeal, but it should not come at the cost of safety, the damage of the environment, the appropriate functions and waste of tax-payer’s money. We wish designers could strike a balance between function and appearance.
