Some people think tourists should follow the behavior and customs of the local people. To what extent do you agree?

With the reduced cost of traveling, more and more people enjoying going around the world or throughout their country. When we get to a new environment, we often face the dilemma of whether or not to follow the behaviors and customs of the local people. From my perspective, we should “do as the Romans do when in Rome.”

Traveling is not only a means of recreation but also an enjoyable experience. Only when one is involved the real life of the local people can we understand more about their culture and have more pleasure. For example, I would like to try the traditional costumes of some ethnic groups in China, taste their food and imitate how they work. I am not just seeing them, but experience their real life. Sometimes, if we do not really get involved, we will be blinded by all the descriptions on travel advertisements.

Moreover, we can have a chance to break the ice with the local people and be able to know more about their real life and customs. People will have less hostility toward others who like to try their way of life. Knowing a place includes not only its current life and history. The local people will tell you more than you can read or hear from the formal records. If lucky, you can catch unpublished legends from an older lady.

Last, we have to admit behave in a special way can be hard for some people. If the local customs are too hard to follow or some behaviors are too uncivilized or weird, such as having sex with different women at different night or swallowing some small animals alive, we are sure not supposed to follow.

To sum up, as tourists, we do want to have profound understanding of the local culture. I agree the people should follow the local customs in order to have real experience and know better about a place. However, for some special customs, we should be cautious and make our wise decision.
