Some people think tourists should follow the behavior and customs of the local people. Do you agree or disagree?
With the reduced cost of traveling, people tend to spend their leisure time traveling to different places. When arriving at a new environment, they often face the dilemma of whether to follow the behaviors and customs of the local residents. From my perspective, tourists should “do as the Romans do when in Rome.”
Following local customs and behaviours enables tourists to enrich experiences and widen horizons. Only when they are actively involved in local life can they be more familiarized with the real life, the culture and the traditions of the region. One of the purposes of traveling is to expand one’s knowledge and horizons. It is easy for visitors to access more information from the local residents than they can read or hear from formal records. For example, they can try on the traditional costumes of some ethnic groups, taste their food and imitate how they work. No descriptions of travel books can be more specific and vivid than the experiences gained in real practice.
Tourists will have more pleasure and enjoyment if they form a harmonious relationship with local residents. Behaving the same as the people in that area, travelers have the opportunity to break the ice with them. The residents will be friendly to visitors if they would like to try their usual lifestyle. As a result, they will be able to enjoy their travels in a more relaxed way. The local dwellers may tell them the best ways to save money, to access the most beautiful scenes or to avoid possible dangers.
However, it true that behaving in a special way can be hard for some people. If the local customs and behaviours are too hard to follow or some behaviors are too uncivilized or weird, visitors are not supposed to follow. For instance, in some areas, people eat insects alive, about which some people may feel disgusting. Or else, some may feel uncomfortable eating spicy food. They do not need to force themselves to do so. Nevertheless, except these uncomfortable cases, it is better to follow local customs for the upper-mentioned reasons.
In summary, it is advisable that tourists follow the local customs in order to have more enjoyment during their journeys and have profound understanding about a place. (Word 374)
